Gisoum on the Path Toward World Heritage Recognition; A Manifestation of Cultural Sustainability and Local Participation in the Tourism Jewel of Talesh

Reza Jamshidi Sehsari, Governor of Talesh County, referring to the significance of this initiative, described Gisoum as the shining jewel of tourism in the county and emphasized that the process of achieving World Heritage recognition for this region goes beyond obtaining an international title; rather, it serves as a foundation for preserving living heritage and creating balanced regional development.

Explaining the key criteria behind the selection of Gisoum as one of the world’s best tourism villages, the Governor identified “local community participation” as the most important factor. In this regard, he stated:
“What distinguishes Gisoum is the inseparable connection between its pristine natural environment and the authentic culture of the Talesh people. We believe that tourism development without preserving indigenous identity and the direct involvement of local communities is meaningless, and the World Heritage recognition of Gisoum reflects precisely this people-centered approach.”

Emphasizing that World Heritage recognition will open a new gateway toward the future of Talesh, he added:
“This process provides an opportunity to achieve balanced development through adherence to international standards, while simultaneously safeguarding the valuable cultural and natural heritage of Gisoum. Such an approach will not only strengthen the local economy, but also ensure the sustainability and ecological health of the region for future generations.”

In conclusion, the Governor of Talesh noted that these efforts will continue through the cooperation and synergy of executive institutions, cultural heritage activists, and the conscious participation of the people of Talesh, so that Gisoum may establish its rightful position in international forums as a successful model of a global tourism village.
